Are You Being Paid Fairly?

Money is a taboo topic at the best of times, and when trying to secure a job, show eagerness and stand apart from the rest, it can feel impossible to broach it with our bosses, or future bosses. 

However, this does not mean it should be ignored!

Below is some guidance I’ve gathered so far, which I hope will help you to earn the salary you are worthy of, and without the awkwardness…

There’s no point trying to negotiate a salary unless you know exactly what you should be earning for your role. Glassdoor is a fantastic tool for figuring out what you should expect to earn. Look at the job you do, the location you work in, and if possible, what others working for your company are earning. Asking for too much could be seen as disrespectful, but it’s important not to undersell your either.

The same goes for promotions. If you feel you’ve been working hard in your job and going the extra mile for a while, and wondering why you’re still stuck in the same position, it may be time to (politely) highlight what the company has been able to achieve as a result of your work. If your boss is particularly busy, it might be courteous to wait until they’ve finished a particular project, or even compile a list and email it over for them to consider in their own time. 

After plucking up the courage to have said conversation, do not feel disillusioned if things don’t go your way. Ask your boss for regular feedback and suggest a date in the future to review it again. Another reason you may not be given the pay-rise you have requested is if a company isn’t in the position financially. You may then need to think about whether you’d be happy to stick it out for a while, or begin looking elsewhere. 

These discussions can make us feel vulnerable, but research and hard work are there to back you up. As ideal as it may be to stay loyal to a particular company, if you are being paid unfairly and you’ve taken these steps, it might be time to move on out!
